Come And Play

Home-Start also has a 'Come and Play' toy library at its scheme in Benoni, where the children and their parent(s) from Home-Start families 'come' to Home-Start to play.

The purpose of the 'Come and Play' Toy Library is to provide parents with young children access to a collection of play materials including toys, games, puzzles, educational toys and play equipment. The aim is to facilitate the development of children, allow them to learn, give them a safe place for recreation as well as to improve the relationship between parent and child or child and siblings.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a specific counselling approach in which games, toys and mediums such as clay, drawings and paint are used to help a child to express their emotions, thoughts, wishes and needs. It helps them to understand muddled feelings and upsetting events that they have not had the chance or the skills to sort out properly. Rather than having to explain what is troubling them, as adult therapy usually expects, children use play to communicate at their own level and at their own pace, without feeling interrogated or threatened.

Home-Start Benoni has a fully equipped Play Room and trained Play Mediators to facilitate this approach to counselling. The trained and supervised Play Mediators will spend time with each child individually in the Play Room. The Play Mediators will meet with the child each week for a minimum of six weeks.

These Play Mediatoes are dedicated individuals and professionals who give up their time to assist young children in need. Home-Start Benoni and Daveyton also offers therapy to parents and infants.

Home-Start Benoni has an Educational Psychologist on the staff that offers psycho-educational assessments as well as emotional assessments for children aged between four and sixteen years old. These professional assessments are charged for at very affordable rates.

Final Thoughts

Home-Start is a friend to parents with young children.

Introducing a volunteer friend to a parent who has never had a real friend, or who desperately needs one, is possibly one of Home-Start's greatest gifts!
